When does the IRS start accepting tax returns though E-File?Top
The first day the IRS will accept transmissions for E-File by anyone will be January 14, 2005. Therefore, filing earlier than January 14th will not get you a faster refund since we cannot send it to the IRS before January 14th.
How can I E-file a Prior Year Return?Top
Prior year returns have to be paper filed and cannot be sent through E-File. The IRS only accepts current year returns through October 15 for e-file. You can find any forms and instructions on the IRS site http://www.irs.gov.
My tax return which was sent through E-File was rejected. My return has an error. What is next?Top
The IRS returns about 1 percent of submissions for corrections. Usually this is because of a typo in the data the customer has entered (an incorrect EIN on a W-2, a misspelled name or a typo in a SSN). Our most common error message this year relates to the Self-Select PIN Program. Most errors have been added to the OLT knowledge base for your convenience.
You will generally have the opportunity to correct the error and resubmit your return.
However, please note that if you do not correct the error, your return will not be accepted. It is important that you contact customer service if you have trouble finding the error. You can also call 1-800-829-1040 to speak to someone at the IRS to find out the nature of the problem. The IRS will not give us details concerning your return and the error codes come directly from the IRS.
Can I use my last check stub to E-file?Top
We strongly recommend against using your last check stub to file. You need information from your W-2 that is not included on your check stub. You may miss out on credits, etc you qualify for. In addition, if the information filed does not match the W-2, you will have to file an amended return.
E-file does not begin until mid January and W-2's are required to be out by Jan 31st.
The IRS rejected my E-File because they think my birth date is incorrect, however it is not. What am I supposed to do? Top
The IRS gets their information from the Social Security Administration. You should check with your local office and make sure what they have on file is the correct information. You should explain your situation and have them resubmit your correct information to the IRS. This should clear up the confusion. This takes time to resolve and will delay your ability to e-file. Therefore it may be in your best interest to paper file.
I have already filed my federal using E-File, so does that mean that I cannot E-File my state return? Top
This year, most states support state only e-filing of returns. The only states that do not support this are Arkansas, Hawaii, Oregon and Oklahoma. If you live in a state not previously listed, you will be able to e-file your state only.
Can I file my return electronically using E-File even though I am filing a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Claim and Allocation?Top
Yes, you can file electronically.
When is the last day for E-file?Top
The IRS accepts e-filed returns for the current tax year until October 15.
What are the advantages of E-File?Top
Fast refunds! Accuracy! Peace of mind! Security! Proof from the IRS within 48 hours that your return was accepted. Your chance of receiving an error notice is reduced because it is caught ahead of time. IRS e-file is more accurate (less than 1% error rate) than paper.
Can I E-File my federal income tax return on the IRS website?Top
No, the IRS cannot compete with the private efile providers. However they can provide you a list of authorized e-file providers to choose from.
Where do I go for free File (E-file)?Top
If you visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov and click on the FreeFile link, there is a list of free efile providers. You can choose a free efile provider from that list to go to their website and efile your tax return for free.
Will filing my tax return using E-File, get me my refund faster?Top
Yes, efiling your tax return will generally get you your refund faster than paper filing. The IRS generally takes 10-14 days to process a refund once an efiled return has been accepted.
Can I check my IRS E-File refund status online?Top

How can I check the status of my federal tax return that I filed online via E-File?Top
