Federal Extension Rules

Extensions must be filed by April 15th.

An extension is a request for additional time to file, not additional time to pay. If you are going to owe, you have to mail in your payment by April 15 to avoid penalty.

If you are due a tax refund, it is not necessary to file an extension. There is no penalty for late filing unless you owe the IRS.

If you electronically file your return on April 15 and the IRS sends it back for corrections, you have until April 20 to get your return retransmitted and accepted by the IRS.

If you need more time and would like to take advantage of our FREE extension filing (IRS Form 4868), you have until April 15 to get your extension transmitted. Just like your federal tax return, if your extension is sent back you have until April 20 to retransmit.

Current Customer

If you are a current customer and your income tax return has been sent back by the IRS for correction after April 1, we will automatically file an extension for you.

If you entered data prior to April 1, and your return was not filed or accepted and you owe, you will need to log back in and request an extension. To do this, you will navigate to the Primary Information section on the "Filing Status" page. Select "YES" to file an extension and save off of that page. We will then advise you that your extension has been filed. You can always check the status of your extension by using the "Login To My 2007 Tax Return" link in our homepage. (contact customer service if you need assistance).

You will be able to complete corrections and resubmit at a later time.
(see
Extension Rules above)

You can print out a copy of your extension for your records by clicking on the link to View Forms. Click on the link for Form 4868. (If you requested printing and paid the $4.95, we will mail you a copy once your extension is accepted).
