State Only Filing - General Information

State Only filing allows you to file your State Income Tax Return separate from your Federal Income Tax Return.

**Arkansas does not participate in State Only Electronic Filing.
If you are filing a State Return for one of the listed states, you will need to either file your State Return along with your Federal Return, or you may print the state forms and mail them in.

All other states allow State Income Tax Returns to be electronically filed as State Only Income Tax Returns as well as filed combined with your Federal Income Tax Return.

Why would I file my State Return by itself?
A few reasons why you may need to file your State Income Tax Return separately from your Federal Income Tax Return:

  • The State Income Tax Return was sent back needing corrections and needs to be resubmitted.
  • The Federal Income Tax Return was already filed.
  • The State Income Tax return requires a different filing status than the Federal Income Tax Return.
There are many other reasons why it would be necessary to file a State Only Income Tax Return.

How do I file a state only return if I am not filing a Federal return until later?

How do I file a State Only return after I have already filed my Federal return by itself?

To file a State Only return if you have not yet filed the Federal return, or if you will not file it with olt.com, do the following:

Go to www.olt.com and select to "Start a New 2008 Tax Return". Create your username and password.

When filing a State Only return, all Federal inputs are required due to state calculations being based off of Federal inputs. Input all Federal data as if you were filing the Federal return.

Once you are past your Federal Tax Summary and forms page, we will ask you on your State Informations page, if you would like to file your state return. Select to file this state and continue through the state sections.

On the "Cost Breakup of our Service" page, you have the option to check a box indicating you will file a State Only return. Select this box. Your State Only return will only cost you $7.95!

Once your state return is accepted, you can come back to file your Federal Income Tax Return at any time for only $7.95!

Once you have logged into the Tax Return Status page, under the State Information section, select to "File This Return" next to your state.
