What is the Self-Select PIN? Top
The Self-Select PIN (Personal Identification Number) method allows taxpayers to electronically sign their e-filed return by selecting a five-digit PIN as their signature. The five-digit PIN can be any five numbers except all zeros. The taxpayer will need their original AGI from their prior year tax return and their date of birth for verification purposes. It eliminates the requirement for Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Declaration for an IRS e-file Return, in most cases, making e-filing returns TRULY PAPERLESS for most taxpayers.
What if I can’t remember last years AGI for the PIN?Top
You may call the IRS toll free number at 1-800-829-1040. If you can provide certain information to the Customer Service Representative (such as their name, SSN, filing status and current address), you may receive the original AGI amount over the phone or you may request a free transcript. Allow 7 to 10 days to receive the transcript. You should be sure to ask for the Original AGI so you can file electronically using the Self-Select PIN Method.
I filed an amended return (1040X) last year. What figures do I use for the PIN method? Top
You must use the original AGI amount from the originally filed return. The return will reject if the amended AGI amount is used. Do not use amounts from an amended return, a corrected amount from a math error notice, or a changed amount from IRS.
I didn't file a tax return last year because I was under the age of 16. What should I do for the Self-Select PIN Program? Top
If you were 16 by December 31, you are eligible to participate in the PIN program even if you haven’t previously filed a return. When asked to enter your AGI, you would need to enter 0.
If you are still under 16, and haven’t previously filed, you will need to file Form 8453-OL.
My spouse didn’t earn any income last year. What AGI do I use for them?Top
Both taxpayers on the joint return will use the FULL AGI amount from the originally filed return. The AGI amount should not be divided between the primary and the spouse.
Can I use the same Self-Select PIN every year? Top
Yes, or you can choose any 5 digits except all zeros.
I did not file taxes last year. Do I have to complete form 8453-OL?Top
Yes, form 8453-OL must be signed and mailed in each year you file online without using the PIN program. This form serves as your signature and identifier when filing your tax return electronically. This form has no affect on your refund. However, it must be signed and mailed in or you could be disqualified from electronically filing in future years.
I did not electronically sign my return and the second page of the 8453-OL says I need to write the declaration control number at the top of the form. Where do I find this number? What is the number? Also, do I send a copy of my 1040A in with this 8453-0L and do I send in a copy of my w-2 with it? Top
If you print the form 8453-OL after your return has been accepted, the OLT program automatically puts the DCN – declaration control number at the top of the form. The only form you mail in to the IRS is the 8453-OL. Do not attach anything else with it. Keep all forms and W-2’s in your files for future reference. The DCN is an identifying number used to e-file your tax return.
I need a pin number. I did not file taxes last year. I did not work last year so do I still qualify for the PIN program? Top
When using the self-select pin program, you will create your own pin number. Since you did not work last, you may have a zero adjusted gross income.

The following taxpayers are eligible to use the Self-Select PIN method:

  • Taxpayers who are eligible to file Form 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ for Tax Year 2007.
  • Taxpayers who filed Form 1040-PR for TY 2006, who are eligible to file Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ for Tax Year 2007.
  • Taxpayers who did not file for Tax Year 2006, but have filed previously.
  • Taxpayers who are age 16 or older on or before December 31, 2007, and have never filed a tax return.
  • Primary Taxpayers under age 16 who have filed previously.
  • Secondary Taxpayers under age 16 who have filed in the immediate prior year (Tax Year 2006).
  • Military personnel residing overseas with APO/FPO addresses.
  • U.S. Citizens and resident aliens residing in the American Possessions of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam and Northern Marianas, or with foreign country addresses.
  • Taxpayers filing Form 4868 (extension of time to file) or Form 2350 (extension for certain U.S. citizens living abroad).
  • Those who are filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers.
This is my first year filing taxes. Can I still use the Self-Select PIN program?Top
No, in order to use the Self-Select PIN program you need to enter your adjusted gross income from last year before you can select a PIN number. If this is your first year filing taxes, then you won’t have an adjusted gross income from last year, and therefore cannot use the PIN program. Instead you will need to use Form 8453-OL which will need to be signed and mailed in once your return has been accepted.
Can I fax the Form 8453-OL?Top
No, Form 8453-OL needs to be mailed in to the address listed on Page 2 of the form.
